Mr. Simkins retired as President and Chief Executive Officer of The Washington Companies, a group of privately owned companies and select public company investments in the sectors of rail and marine transportation, shipyards, mining, environmental construction, heavy equipment sales and aviation products, in 2022 after serving in that role since 2001.

From 1988 to 2001, Mr. Simkins held a variety of senior leadership roles at The Washington Companies, including Executive Vice President; President of Westran, Inc., a long haul trucking company; Controller of Washington Construction, an engineering and construction services company; Vice President of Envirocon, Inc., an environmental remediation company; and Internal Auditor of The Washington Companies. From 1985 to 1988, Mr. Simkins served as a bank examiner at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.

Mr. Simkins served on the boards of Atlas Corp. from 2019 to 2023 and Seaspan Corporation from 2017 to 2020.
