Toms River Community Garden
A complex that promotes inclusion for children and young adults with special needs through various events and activities needs support to build a community garden that will allow people of all abilities to come together and participate in growing produce that will be donated to a local food bank.
Why It Matters
Community gardens promote full inclusion, serve as a place for interaction and also benefit a large part of the surrounding area. This project within the Toms River Field of Dreams complex will be able to assist over 1,500 people – including children and young adults of all ages. As an open, public space, this will be an inclusive environment for the entire community to enjoy all year round. The TRFOD also hopes to raise awareness for the special needs community in the process.
The Impact
“We are creating a place where people of varying ages can learning about agriculture and healthy diets and be with others. It’s all about everyone coming together and working together to help others. That’s the goal of the community garden,” wrote project leader Christian Kane, a local math teacher.
