Home Safety Council and Lowe's Team up to Host 'Safety Saturday'
Local Events Kick off Fire Safety Month with Free, Educational
Activities for the Whole Family
MOORESVILLE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
The Home
Safety Council and Lowe's
kick off Fire Safety Month with Safety
Saturday on Sept. 26 to teach children and their families how to
prevent fires and other accidents in the home. According to the Home
Safety Council, home-related injuries account for nearly 20,000 deaths
and 21 million medical visits in the United States every year. For
children aged 1 to 14, fires and burns are the number one cause of home
injury deaths.
At 10 a.m. on Sept. 26, every Lowe's store across the United States and
Canada will offer a Build and Grow workshop focused on home safety that
will allow children to build a wooden fire truck to take home. Children
will also receive educational materials created by the Home Safety
Council, providing a fun, exciting and creative way to learn about home
and fire safety.
Lowe's conducts Build and Grow workshops bi-weekly as a way for parents
and adult mentors to spend quality time with their children--free of
charge. The workshops are recommended for children in grades 2 to 5, and
each provides hands-on instruction to approximately 50 children. To
sign-up for the fire truck Build and Grow workshop at a local store,
visit lowesbuildandgrow.com.
In addition to Build and Grow activities, many Lowe's stores will host
safety fairs in the parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to serve
as a one-stop resource for home safety ideas and project starters to
help rid homes of hidden dangers. Visitors may ask local safety experts
questions about home safety products and receive valuable home safety
advice and information to help keep their families safe from fires,
burns and other home injuries. To find a Safety Saturday event near you,
visit homesafetycouncil.org/SafetySaturday.
Fires and burns are the third-leading cause of accidental home injury
deaths, causing about 3,400 fatalities annually. To help educate local
communities about the importance of fire safety, the Home Safety Council
will lead a side-by-side burn demonstration in the parking lot of 11
Lowe's stores.
In 1993, Lowe's founded the Home Safety Council with the vision of
creating safer American homes. The Home Safety Council became an
independent, nonprofit organization in 2003, and Lowe's continues to
support the organization's mission through the Lowe's Charitable and
Educational Foundation.
