Our experts help make homes feel like spring has sprung, no matter what the weather brings
MOORESVILLE, N.C. — When Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his Pennsylvania burrow this week and saw his shadow, millions of Americans facing blustery winter weather across the country groaned. Phil’s forecast of six more weeks of winter leaves many of us asking, “Why can’t it be spring already?” Not to fear, Lowe’s is here with five tips that will help beat the winter blues and make it feel like spring (which we promise is coming!).
- Change your color, change your mood. Cozy colors, such as yellow and orange, create warmth and a sense of joy. Consider painting an accent wall in a happy and uplifting color. For less than $50 and a few hours, you can make a dramatic impact with the right paint hue on a wall, small accent table or even a lamp.
- Look on the bright side. Change old light bulbs to new LEDs to lighten the mood in your home. Select a light bulb color between 2,500 and 3,000 Kelvin to create a welcoming and warm environment in bedrooms, living rooms or dens. In areas where you want to tackle tasks, consider a color temperature between 5,000 and 6,500 Kelvin, which simulates daylight.
- Go camping – indoors. Make your kids feel like spring has sprung inside by creating a tent from a simple drop cloth and plywood boards. Add a flashlight, s’mores maker and a sleeping bag, and let the kids’ imaginations run wild. Lowe’s Creative Ideas offers a wide range of simple, affordable projects to keep kids occupied during cold days. Get inspired at Lowes.com/creative-ideas.
- Enjoy a bird’s-eye view. According to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife survey, one out of every five Americans is a birdwatcher. Perch at a window and participate. Roll pinecones in peanut butter and birdseed. Attach a string to hang outdoors and watch nature’s show. The neighborhood birds will remember your home for months to come and will be sure to make repeat appearances all season long, serving not only as entertainment, but a natural form of pest control.
- Clear out winter clutter. While you may have already broken your other New Year’s resolutions, use the time indoors to organize your home. Start with a pantry, closet or living space where your family entertains regularly. Making small changes to clear the clutter and gain control will make your whole family feel more comfortable spending longer hours at home. Consider freshening the smell in your home by boiling citrus peels in water on the stove or buy green plants to make the indoors feel like a spring oasis.
