Lowe’s celebrates grand opening of Tennessee Direct Fulfillment Center

At 10:21 am Central Time on Thursday, Lowe’s new direct fulfillment center (DFC) just outside of Nashville was officially open for business. That’s when Lowe’s President and CEO Marvin Ellison handed off the company’s first package to be delivered to a customer on grand opening day at the new fulfillment center. The package is en route to a customer in Columbus, Ohio.

The central location

The central location of the 1.1 million square foot facility will allow Lowe’s to serve more customers and serve them quickly. Once the center is fully operational, it will be able to deliver product to customers in 75 percent of the country in two days or less. That means the facility will have the capacity to ship up to 100,000 packages every single day. Part of the reason Lowe’s chose this location for the DFC is because it is surrounded by shipping hubs, the interstate system and a highly skilled workforce.

Currently the DFC employs 200 people and is expected to employ 600 by the time it is fully operational

Currently, the DFC employs 200 people and is expected to employ 600 by the time it is fully operational in 2023. During the grand opening ceremony of the facility Thursday morning, Ellison, a Tennessee native, said he’s proud of the investment Lowe’s is making in the state.

“This facility gives us the ability to create 600 jobs in this local area, with a state-of-the-art facility that we’re very proud of,” Ellison said. “This facility just intensifies our presence and gives us the ability to centralize the number of jobs we can create in this location.”

Lowe’s $150 million financial investment in the facility will support the company’s goal of growing a nimbler supply chain that can meet customer’s changing needs. While meeting the needs of customers, Lowe’s also hopes to continue promoting job creation and economic growth for the local area.

“This warehouse and distribution facility that Lowe’s has built here in Coopertown is going to make a tremendous impact for so many people,” said Jamie Stiff of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community. “To hire 600 individuals locally here, for a community that 60 percent of their population drives outside the county every day to go to work, this provides a greater quality of life, great wages, benefits and everything. It’s going to be a huge impact to the local community.”

An economic analysis commissioned by the Robertson County Economic Development Board shows over the next 12 years, the DFC will help generate more than $345 million in economic impact on Robertson County and $14.5 million in tax revenue.
