Lowe’s releases annual Corporate Responsibility report and 2018 highlights

This week, Lowe’s released its 2018 Corporate Responsibility report. The report shows how the company is committed to supporting its people, communities, products and planet by improving its economic, social and environmental impacts.

The report includes not only Lowe’s goals for being a responsible corporate citizen, but also its progress. This year, Lowe’s is proud to release numbers showing how it’s actually beating some of its sustainability goals sooner than expected.

GOALS

“We met our 2020 U.S. store energy efficiency goal early in 2018 by achieving 13.8 percent efficiency, a pace we set earlier when we met our (2020) U.S. store carbon emissions goal in 2016,” said Chris Cassell, Lowe’s director of corporate responsibility. “To date, we have continued to reduce carbon emissions by 29.8 percent.”

Although great progress is being made, Lowe’s is still striving for more. The report also laid out another large emissions goal: reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 40% below 2016 levels by 2030.

“We are increasingly deliberate about reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, particularly those coming from our own facilities and transportation – which is Scope 1 – and the amount and type of energy we’re using in our operations, which is Scope 2,” added Cassell.

2018 HIGHLIGHTS

In addition to environmental initiatives, Lowe’s also covered work encompassing communities, product sustainability and operations. A few of the highlights from the 2018 report include:

  • 31% of the Lowe’s Board of Directors are women.
  • Lowe’s implemented a safer chemical policy.
  • Lowe’s associates completed 315,000 hours of community service via volunteering and Lowe’s Heroes projects.
  • 100% of Lowe’s U.S. transportation partners are part of the EPA’s Smartway program.
  • Lowe’s invested $46 million in our local communities through nonprofit partnerships.

“To deliver on our mission and build a sustainable foundation for growth, we set our sights on four key strategies: merchandising excellence, supply chain transformation, operational efficiency and customer engagement,” said Marvin R. Ellison, Lowe’s president and CEO. “Because we know that corporate responsibility is integral to the success of these strategies, we’re continuing the work of putting responsible practices in place to strengthen our foundation.”
