For 122 college students, this summer at Lowe’s was about more than just clocking in and out. It was a chance to roll up their sleeves, make real connections, and discover new paths they might not have imagined for themselves.
This year’s group came from 51 different colleges and universities, bringing together returning interns, student veterans, and students from historically Black colleges and Hispanic-Serving Institutions. All summer long, they teamed up with Lowe’s associates, learned from mentors, and soaked up experiences that will stick with them long after the internship ends.
For Marti Bailey, the experience exceeded expectations.
The overall experience has been rewarding. I feel like I’ve learned so much and had opportunities that would have been hard to get anywhere else.
Outside of their daily projects, interns gathered for fireside chats with Lowe’s leaders, swapping stories and soaking up advice about leadership, growth, and finding your way in the working world.
For Airyka Houston, those conversations reinforced the importance of taking initiative.
The main thing I took away from the fireside chats is don’t be afraid to ask questions, and don’t be afraid to stand out.
But the summer wasn’t all about office life. One rainy day at the Carolina Raptor Center, interns pulled on their boots and got to work tearing down old sheds, building new ones, and piecing together STEAM kits for local kids. Working side by side in the rain, they found out just how much you can accomplish when you pitch in together for a good cause.
“The raptor center was my favorite, because it was raining,” Esteban Napa Narciso said with a laugh. “We were able to contribute to a cause and try to do something for people to enjoy.”
For many, the friendships and bonds they built along the way turned out to be just as important as any project or presentation.
Friendships, even if they are for a short period of time, can become very powerful.
For Houston, the internship also expanded her perspective on what a career at Lowe’s can look like.
“The internship has shown me that the possibilities are endless,” she said. “I don’t have to just stay in one lane. There are different departments that Lowe’s has, and the best thing I’ve learned is that you can go to different departments and learn from different people.”
From learning side by side with leaders to showing for the community, this summer gave interns more than just a peek behind the curtain at Lowe’s. It gave them new confidence, lasting friendships, and the kind of experiences that help shape what comes next.
