With nearly 94 million U.S. households sharing their homes with a pet, it's clear that Americans are a nation of animal lovers. But how deep does that bond really go? Lowe's knows that pets aren't just animals—they're family. That’s why Lowe's teamed up with The Harris Poll to dig into the data and better understand the lives, habits, and hearts of today's pet parent*.
Turns out, the connection between people and their pets runs deep—emotionally, practically, and even now architecturally.
Nearly all indoor pet owners (94%) say their pet's mood affects their own, and over three-quarters (77%) consider their pet a full-fledged family member. More than half (52%) call their pet their best friend.
That dedication shows up in daily decisions, too. Seventy percent of pet owners say they'd cancel plans to stay home with their furry (or feathery) companions—and more than 35% have even canceled plans with a family member to do just that.
And when it comes to their homes, pet parents are designing with their animals in mind. Nearly half of indoor pet owners (47%) already have a designated outdoor space for their pets, and about one-third (30%) would consider adding one. In fact, 65% of owners say they've made outdoor home design choices based on their pet, while a whopping 84% have made pet-based decisions for their indoor spaces.
