Life changes quickly. Just ask Jerry Shockey, who took off eight months ago for a deployment with the Air National Guard.
During his service overseas, Shockley oversaw combat communications while leaving his family and job at Lowe’s as an Information Security Analyst. Due to international travel restrictions from the pandemic, Shockley’s return home was delayed, causing him to miss the birth of his son, Alec.
“It was hard, and I felt helpless,” said Shockley of being separated abroad. “I’m lucky to have a wife who is incredibly strong and it’s a special feeling to return home.”
Upon his return to Mooresville, North Carolina in June, Shockley received a warm welcome from his family, friends and colleagues at Lowe’s. To further say thank you, dozens of Lowe’s associates created a virtual welcome home video, including a special message from executive leaders and Challenge Coin presentation from Joe McFarland, Executive Vice President of Stores and a Desert Shield / Storm Marine Veteran.
“Although many of us couldn’t celebrate Jerry’s safe return in-person, it was important that we found a small way to salute his service,” said McFarland. “The Lowe’s camo vest and Challenge Coin are enduring symbols of our gratitude, and we’re extremely proud to employ more than 650 active duty military associates like Jerry at Lowe’s.”
Now at home with his young family, Shockley is ready to resume his post in Mooresville.
Having this position at Lowe’s takes a huge weight off my shoulders when I’m serving overseas. It allows me to focus on the mission, knowing I’ve got strong support in the workplace and beyond.
