For several months now, COVID-19 has forced families into spending more time at home. But instead of letting boredom set in, many dads across the country used the time and their own creativity to make their DIY dreams come true. So this year, Lowe’s is celebrating Father’s Day differently and showcasing what can be built with a little creativity, a lot of love and the right tools.
From basic home repairs, to backyard rollercoasters – DIY dads have risen to the occasion during the pandemic by creating, building and inspiring.
But one father in particular took to teaching others during this season of staying at home, by taking his practical “dadvice” and sharing it with others online. Rob Kenney, the dad behind the viral “Dad, How Do I” YouTube channel, had long been sharing his DIY tips with his daughter when he realized there were probably a lot of other young adults who needed the same guidance.
Kenney grew up without a father in his life and knows the value of having someone older and more experienced help talk you through everyday tasks, like how to fix a running toilet or how to unclog a sink. He posted his first video on YouTube about one month ago. The loveable DIY dad took the internet by storm; Kenney’s channel shot up to more than 2.2 million subscribers in just a few weeks.
To help recognize all the other DIY dads out there, Kenney is helping Lowe’s kick off this Father’s Day by asking others to share all that awesome dad content using #DadBuiltThis. Then, Lowe’s will share and celebrate that inspirational content from fathers and father-figures who have built things while staying at home.
What Kenney didn’t know, is that Lowe’s was also celebrating him.
Earlier this month, Lowe’s associates surprised Kenney by showing up at his house with a few of his favorites: a truck bed full of tools.
“Lowe’s is just incredible. With this surprise, they just showed up on my doorstep…,” Kenney laughed. “I’m speechless.”
These tools will help keep Kenney DIYing, sharing and teaching others and serve as an early Father’s Day gift from Lowe’s to say ‘thank you’ for being an internet dad and a positive light during this time.
“I can’t even get my head around it,” Kenney said. “What’s happened in my life in the last two weeks has been beyond and then this is just another thing. Thank you, Lowe’s.
“I’m glad I’m able to help people on a lot bigger scale than I ever imagined. I’m honored and humbled.”
Now, Kenney is helping pay-it-forward. He’s helping Lowe’s identify and gift other DIY dads with $100,000 worth of tools, so they can keep doing what they love for the people they love. And if you want to know Kenney’s top tool picks from Lowe’s, you’re in luck. He and several other top DIY dad’s shared their own Father’s Day gift guides with Lowe’s so you can skip straight to the good stuff.
Once you’ve picked out the perfect gift from Lowe’s, celebrate your dad’s creativity by sharing pictures online using #DadBuiltThis.
