Every year since 1984, the Friday before Mother's Day has been dedicated to military spouses across every branch. This year is no different, and Lowe's, known for its steadfast commitment to the military, continues this support by honoring our exceptional military spouses. In fact, 7% of Lowe's overall hiring in 2023 came from the military community. As a top military spouse-friendly employer, Lowe’s is joining in on the celebration of these dedicated individuals and the sacrifices they make by highlighting the Lowe's Military Spouse Sales Specialist Fellowship.
One of the unique challenges in a military spouse's life is the constant change—in terms of command, communities, and location, military members and their families are always on the move. As a wife to an Air Force Combat Controller, Sonnia Grossman experienced this firsthand, relocating across the country five times for her husband's job and finding it difficult to find an employer that would hire her, knowing she'd be moving in the next years.
I've had to quit many different jobs. I had a career, and then, like a lot of people who had careers before they met their military husbands, we had to give them up. So, knowing that a corporation like Lowe's will carry on wherever you go - that's a major plus.
Now residing in Florida, Sonnia discovered Lowe's Military Spouse Fellowship, a 12-week paid training program in partnership with Hiring Our Heroes, aimed at bringing jobs directly to military spouses through guided mentorship and work experience, and dove right in. A major perk of the program? The Lowe's Military Spouse Transfer Policy. This policy offers a flexible and easy path for spouses relocating to make lateral moves within Lowe's and keep growing their careers. After completing the 12-week fellowship, Sonnia was hired the next week and began her official tenure at Lowe's. She urges other military spouses to consider their career paths, even while juggling the demands of military life.
People don't realize the value that there is in military spouses and their eclectic experiences. We meet people from all over the world. We've lived in different countries, so we have value in that, and we can bring that into our work environment because you work with different personalities and different people, and we have a broader understanding of that.
Rebekah Medlin, associate military recruiter, echoes Sonnia's sentiment that military spouses bring unique skills to the workforce.
Military spouses bring a wealth of diverse experiences and skills to the workplace. Their adaptability, resilience, and ability to thrive in diverse environments that can enrich teams and contribute to organizational success. We are excited to provide this opportunity to Military spouses.
