As we roll into a new year, it's that exciting - or dreaded - time for many people, a time to set new year resolutions. While the beginning of January can bring a renewed sense of purpose and determination when it comes to goal setting, it's easy to get overwhelmed when it comes to execution. In fact, researchers say that only 9% of Americans who make resolutions complete them. By the end of the first week of January, 23% have quit, and 43% of resolution hopefuls will call it by the end of the month.
When it comes to your career, goal setting can be daunting even without the pressure of a new year, a new you. So, how do you move through the rest of 2024 with the same sense of commitment you feel right now? Take a page from Lowe's associate Maha Dajani, who started as a part-time seasonal cashier in 2022. Less than two years later, she's now the Merchandising Assistant Store Manager for the same location.
These past two years have been a remarkable journey of learning and growth. With the support of my amazing managers, coupled with my own motivation and determination, I've been able to accomplish a great deal over the last two years.
Coming from the medical field, Maha had zero retail experience. Still, she took on the challenge with grit and determination, moving from role to role within the company with a sense of adventure and curiosity. It paid off; in the two years of her Lowe's tenure, Maha has been promoted four times!
The incredible support, unstoppable motivation, and determination from everyone at Lowe's made a profound impact. It goes beyond just making sales and hitting numbers: it's about supporting each other and the belief that we can all climb the ladder to success.
Experts say there's a key to keeping your resolutions roaring throughout the year: make your resolutions SMART goals.
SMART Goals
Specific: Create clear and well-defined objectives
Measurable: Incorporate measurably trackable benchmarks
Achievable: Make sure your goal is realistic
Relevant: Goals should connect to your larger purpose, your "why?"
Time-Bound: Have time-related parameters built in to stay on track
One last tip for taking your 2024 intentions to the next level: find a support system. The American Society of Training and Development found people who share their goals are 65% more likely to stay committed, and chances of success increase to 95 percent when they build in ongoing meetings with their partners to check in on progress. Maha says the backing from Lowe's has been integral to crushing her career goals.
Lowe’s feels like my support family, a place where I truly belong, in a collective sense and desire for more, driven by the hunger for success and craving the exhilaration of achieving victory at the top.
