Last week, Lowe’s and Matt Light, three-time Super Bowl champion and founder of The Light Foundation, kicked off Lowe’s first 100 Hometowns program in Greenville, Ohio, where Light was born and raised.

Twenty youths from the foundation learned STEAM skills (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) as they built a 40-foot bridge at Timber Frame Leadership Camp. They convened for a three-day overnight program designed for students interested in acquiring hands-on trade skills, learning about the ancient art of timber framing, and gaining critical leadership experience along the way.

“I think it’s cool to see all the pieces come together,” said camper Carrie Rhoades. “All the work that goes into it – the sweat, the blood – it comes together to make something big and spectacular and that’s really awesome to see.”

Light chose the covered bridge project because of its link to the original pioneers who entered the Greenville area, and because it’s a unique form of timber framing to teach to the campers about. Local red vest associates were on hand to help out as well.

“The idea of giving back is not just something I feel obligated to do,” Light said. “It’s more, ‘Why wouldn’t you?’”

The project also marks the first collaboration between the 2021 Lowe’s Home Team and Lowe’s 100 Hometowns. Light, who retired after spending all 11 years of his career with New England, joins Drew Brees, Najee Harris, Justin Fields, Chris Godwin and Christian McCaffery and six yet-to-be named NFL stars who are helping make homes better for all.

“When we knew that we had an opportunity to join the Lowe’s Home Team and everything that came with it – it was a no-brainer for us,” Light explained. “They get us, they get what we’re passionate about and we get what they’re passionate about. When you do things together with a group like that, you know it’s going to be successful."
