The Christmas tree.
Perhaps the most beloved of all holiday decorations this time of year. Whether fresh-cut or artificial, these evergreens signify a season of giving and have a way of bringing hope, joy and light into our homes – something we could all use a little more of in 2020.
But for thousands of families this year, including Charlotte homeowner Vanessa Patton and her family, decorations were a novelty they couldn’t afford.
“I don’t think I’m going to be able to buy a Christmas tree,” Patton said.
Job loss, illness and other financial hardships struck American homes this year, as the coronavirus pandemic changed our lives in ways many of us never imagined.
“Every day people are struggling and having a hard time affording things for their families,” said Lowe’s associate, Astrid Babston. “And during COVID, it makes it a lot harder. People are losing their jobs… it’s just hurting a lot of people during these times.”
So how, Lowe’s asked, can we turn that hurt into hope this holiday season? By lighting up more than 13,000 homes across the country. Over the next few weeks, Lowe’s is partnering with the NFL and nonprofit organizations nationwide to donate and deliver $1 million worth of pre-lit Christmas trees to families and organizations impacted by the pandemic.
“It’s really touching,” Babston said. “I’m just so happy to work for a company that does this, that helps people out no matter what, that gives and goes the extra mile.
“Today, we’re going throughout Charlotte and surprising families with the trees. They don’t know that we’re coming and it’s really exciting.”
Patton and her son were one of the Charlotte families surprised with a tree. Little did they know, a local celebrity was coming along for the delivery.
“The Panthers mascot, Sir Purr, I love Sir Purr!” Babston said. “He’s joining… and I know that’s going to touch them and touch their hearts because he has a way of brightening the day.”
And brighten it, he did.
“My son is a big Panthers fan so that just made his day,” Patton laughed. “He’s going to want to tell all his friends.”
The Patton family immediately set up and started decorating their new tree, bringing a little more light and a lot more joy to their home that’s sure to last throughout this holiday season.
My kids are happy, this is a blessing. You just don’t get this every day. I’m thankful and grateful.
Even though the donated trees will hopefully help close out the year on a high note, Babston hopes this is just the beginning.
“Maybe this one thing Lowe’s is doing will inspire others. Maybe it will be a ripple effect,” she said. “It just takes a little thing, whether it’s a Christmas tree, canned goods, whatever you can do… it might just get others to join in and help out the less fortunate.”
