Lowe’s was named AMVETS Veteran Friendly Employer of the Year during their national convention in Greensboro, North Carolina this summer.

The annually presented award recognizes a private sector or government employer dedicated to improving the lives of veterans through their commitment to serve veterans through hiring practices, including veterans in organizational culture, and by being active in community service and fundraisers for veterans and their families.

This is the first time Lowe’s has earned this AMVETS award.

“As the proud employer of more than 20,000 veterans, it is a tremendous honor for Lowe’s to be named this year’s AMVETS Employer of the Year,” said Joe McFarland, Lowe’s executive vice president of stores and Desert Shield/Storm Marine veteran. “Lowe’s has always made it a priority to support the military community, with a special focus on creating employment opportunities. Thanks to our partnership with AMVETS, we have been able to build on that commitment by providing pathways for training and entrepreneurship for transition service members, military spouses and veterans in skilled trades.”

Since its founding in 1921, Lowe’s has integrated veterans throughout the company office culture and structure by employing veterans throughout the ranks, from associates to management and executive-level positions. Lowe’s also offers support such as differential pay during service and camo vests for associates to wear as a symbol of service.

“As a company founded by a World War II veteran, Lowe’s serves as a model organization for how to hire, train, and retain those who served in our Armed Forces,” said AMVETS National Commander Jan Brown. “Congratulations to Lowe’s and thank you for your relentless support of American veterans.”
