While Pittsburgh gets ready for the excitement of the NFL Draft, something quieter but just as meaningful is happening nearby. Instead of draft picks, this story is about building something lasting for a local family.

Lowe’s has teamed up with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh and the NFL through Habitat for Humanity’s 'Home is the Key' initiative, helping to build two new homes that promise a fresh start for local families.

For one soon-to-be homeowner, this isn’t just about four walls and a roof. It’s the start of a new chapter.

Led by a single mom raising two kids, the family has weathered more than their share of storms. After losing a loved one in 2022, they found themselves without a place to call home the following year, facing tough times and uncertainty. But through it all, she’s worked tirelessly to rebuild, restoring her credit, finding her footing and holding onto the hope of one day having a place to settle in for good.

Now, as hammers swing and walls go up, the family is finally able to look forward to something that’s been missing for years: a sense of stability and a place to truly belong.

Adding to the moment, Pittsburgh Steelers legend Jerome Bettis, better known as ‘The Bus’, visited the build site, lending his larger-than-life support and spotlighting the importance of safe, affordable housing in the community.

“Affordable housing isn’t just about building homes, it’s about investing in people, and that investment pays dividends for generations in so many ways,” said Dr. Howard B. Slaughter Jr., president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh.

This build is happening at the same time as Lowe’s big moment at the NFL Draft, where they’ll be hosting the green room for the league’s top prospects. All furniture items in the green room will be donated to Habitat for Humanity after the big event.

While the draft is all about football’s future stars, the Habitat project is about a different kind of future, one built on community, hope and the promise of a better tomorrow.

The second home in this small but mighty development will soon welcome another Pittsburgh family, spreading the impact of this partnership even further.

At its heart, this project is about more than building houses. It’s a shared promise from Lowe’s, the NFL, and Habitat for Humanity to help tackle housing challenges and lift up the neighborhoods they call home.
