Panthers players and Lowe’s Heroes give back to community through Habitat for Humanity build
With help from Habitat for Humanity and the Carolina Panthers, a new Charlotte homeowner is one step closer to moving into a brand-new home. The home build project took place on Red Vest Way, a street in Charlotte, North Carolina named after Lowe’s classic “Red Vests”. Red Vest Way is part of Lowe’s commitment to tackle safe and affordable housing challenges in its hometown.
The event took place on the Panthers “Keep Pounding Day”, which is a day of volunteer events around the Carolinas where players, coaches and staff engage in various activities ranging from community builds to volunteering in public schools.
During the volunteer shift on Red Vest Way, Panthers players and staff partnered with Lowe’s Heroes volunteers to place side panels on one Red Vest home, and the construction of window and wall framing for another. Volunteers were evenly split to tackle the workload and learn about different parts of the build.
Several Lowe’s Heroes working with players said they were excited about the partnership and expressed the importance of Lowe’s community engagement as well as the Carolina Panthers.
“I think it’s real big for the community and showing community support,” said Rocky Griffin, a Lowe’s volunteer. “Lowe’s is big on giving back and it’s important to get involved when you can.”
“The players don’t only get to play for the city but they also get to give back to it.” added another Lowe’s Hero, Nick Hewett.
Panthers linebacker, Andre Smith also expressed the importance of giving back and how it can be life changing for those less fortunate.
“It’s important to give back and help less fortunate families,” said Smith. “You never know who you may touch and make a difference in their life.”
Smith talked about players like Jameis Winston who were impacted by volunteer efforts during their childhood and how those opened the door for a brighter future.
As the volunteer shift ended, Smith gave a few encouraging words for the families who will soon call these houses their home.
“I hope you enjoy it; a lot of work and love went into it,” he said. “Keep believing in your dreams, have faith and Keep Pounding.”
