Nearly 5,500 volunteers gathered at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, to take on a challenge: the 24-hour bunk bed build. Lowe's and non-profit partner Sleep in Heavenly Peace set out to smash the record for the most bunk beds built in one overnight effort, and the payoff? 5,000 bunk beds built for children in need across the nation.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace estimates that 7 million children sleep on the floor, but with the help of Lowe's, they intend to get that number to zero. Chad Sanders, Lowe's vice president of merchandising and Sleep in Heavenly Peace board member, says the build is a perfect way to bring attention to the problem. "We're making a difference today, and that's what this is all about. First of all, we've got to get awareness that people know there's a problem, but bigger than that, we're making a difference. And that's what Lowe's is all about. Stepping up to the challenge to make a difference."
This 24-hour build will move the dial in that mission, using over 96 miles of lumber, 200 drills, and 1,700 gallons of wood stain to construct beds for children without them in 16 states and 29 Sleep in Heavenly Peace chapters.
