When members of their community were displaced following historic flooding, Lowe’s Heroes jumped into action in Nebraska. It’s estimated the flooding caused at least $1.4 billion in damage in the state, leaving many displaced and wondering where to go from here.
In the days and weeks following a disaster, Lowe’s proactively seeks ways to help the community and its own associates.
Four Lowe’s associates were displaced by the floods and are being assisted by the company’s Employee Relief Fund.
Stores donated blue buckets, moving boxes and hundreds of pallets to a local Salvation Army so they could ship necessary relief items.
This week, Lowe’s set up shop at a Fremont mall half an hour outside of Omaha, offering hot meals, relief supplies and rebuilding tips for the long recovery ahead. Nearby, the American Red Cross is housing nearly 100 people who were displaced by the floods.
“We haven’t waited for our community to need us, we’ve put so many resources quickly in place to proactively serve our neighbors,” said Lowe’s District Manager Don Mallard, who’s been with the company for 13 years.
Mallard is no stranger to disaster, previously working through storms in Arkansas, Alabama and Missouri before moving to Nebraska a year and a half ago.
Lowe’s Emergency Command Center is keeping stores stocked to support customers, too. Command Center team members have worked around the clock, sending truckloads of critically needed supplies like long-handled tools, Clorox, mold removal, garbage bags, Lowe’s buckets, squeegees and sump pumps.
Three Lowe’s stores will host community events next week (dates and times below), including grilling for neighbors and distributing relief supplies. At these events, Lowe’s will have associate experts on hand to educate customers and provide information about services the company offers to help them recover after a natural disaster. FEMA will also set up information stations within Lowe’s stores in the coming weeks, another way to provide resources to a recovering community.
