A universal symbol of celebration and welcome, wreaths adorn millions of front doors across America each year during the holiday season. This Veterans Day, Lowe’s invites families across the nation to add one more important wreath to their seasonal celebrations.
For the first time, Lowe’s will honor our nation’s military service members and families by encouraging households to create and display a blue wreath on their door this Veterans Day as a simple, yet powerful, DIY gesture of thanks. Lowe’s stores, 300,000 Lowe’s associates, numerous DIY creators and Lowe’s non-profit military partners are helping lead by example.
According to color psychology, blue is the color of reflection and serenity—two emotions that veterans and military families embrace on Veterans Day. For military families, who move every three years and eight times more than non-military families on average, the symbolic gesture can go a long way towards feeling welcomed to a new neighborhood or even back home from deployment abroad.
Any wreath will do — whether it’s an old green one stowed in a garage or attic that can transform through a family DIY project with paint, or one made from wire and paper clips painted blue.
Lowe’s has partnered with a number of DIY creators and military families who can help inspire how to bring the patriotic creation to life, even personalizing them with customized accents for their loved ones who have served.
“Our wreath was created from things we already had at the house, in true military family fashion, we use what we have to adapt and make things happen. We painted an old wreath, created a yellow ribbon from construction paper as a symbol of Mark’s active-duty service in the Army, and added on gold stars to pay homage to the Gold Star Families whose vets paid the ultimate sacrifice.” - Shakira Patterson
"There is no greater honor than to serve, my husband tells me. As a military wife, I completely understand. We created a wreath of appreciation for our hero and all of the heroes around us by GOING BLUE with our front door wreath. We encourage you to join in letting all veterans know that they are welcomed home!" - Danielle Schaffer
Not sure which color of blue to use? No problem! Any shade of blue will do, but if you need, Lowe's and Valspar® & HGTV Home® by Sherwin-Williams have partnered on the perfect shade of paint to honor veterans, meant to inspire serenity and reflection.
For the month of November, all shades of “Indigo Cloth” will be designated “Veteran Blue” exclusively on Lowes.com and in Lowe's stores nationwide with an in-store Color Code of 4009-7.
Lowe’s supports military families through its trademark 10 percent discount – every day, guaranteed – to active-duty military personnel, veterans, and their spouses, saving them more than $1 billion annually.
Lowe’s commitment to military service members and their families also extends year-round through its partnerships to support affordable housing and workforce development with its military non-profit partners. The USO, AMVETS, Building Homes for Heroes, Purple Heart Homes, and Operation FINALLY HOME, each showed up in their own ways.
AMVETS will display blue wreaths at its Posts nationwide, as well as for the first time, place a blue wreath to honor America’s military members and veterans during its annual National Veterans Day Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery on Nov. 11.
The USO has joined in by building blue wreaths during Coffee Connections, a monthly virtual and in-person military spouse event series at local USO centers. The wreaths will be displayed at each participating center to demonstrate honor and gratitude for the generations of men and women who previously served.
Building Homes for Heroes has gifted 11 Homes in 11 Weeks to veterans and their families in honor of the holiday, adding blue wreaths as a finishing touch to each home. Purple Heart Homes is welcoming veterans with a blue wreath on display at Richard’s Coffee Shop, a coffee shop in Mooresville, N.C. dedicated to honoring veterans, active-duty personnel and emergency services personnel. Operation FINALLY HOME has also created its own blue wreath and is encouraging others to join and share photos of their blue wreaths.
Building Homes for Heroes gifted Army Sergeant First Class John Goudie and his family a new home adorned with a blue wreath in honor of his service and sacrifice.
On Nov. 9, Lowe’s will also partner with the Carolina Panthers to host “Picnic With A Veteran” on the playing field, as part of their Salute to Service. Blue wreaths will be displayed to pay tribute to the veterans in attendance and the military community.
So Nov. 11, please join Lowe’s in honoring veterans and their families with this fun, family-friendly-activity and gesture that lets everyone in the neighborhood know how grateful you are for all veterans who have served and sacrificed for the country.
