Roberto Clemente Playground improvements
A town park named after baseball legend and humanitarian Roberto Clemente seeks to revitalize and update the dilapidated recreation area by installing new, inclusive playground equipment to replace current unsafe and unusable play structures.
Why It Matters
The new playground will serve to improve recreational opportunities, encourage inclusive play between children of all abilities and ages and revitalize the neighborhood. Surrounded by multiple schools serving grades K through 12, densely populated homes and apartment complexes, and various types of houses of worship, Roberto Clemente Park is used as a recreational haven and general point of gathering for those living and visiting Paterson’s Fifth Ward.
The Impact
“The pandemic has made clear how important parks and open space are to residents' personal well-being and sense of community,” wrote project nominator Dacil Tilos, director of community schools. “This project would support the City of Paterson's Parks Vision Plan of providing a well-programmed and safe space supported by active community groups to promote community cohesion and reduce crime.”
