At Lowe’s, we believe strong communities are built by the people who know them best. Every neighborhood has opportunities to grow—whether it’s restoring a shared space, improving places where neighbors connect, or increasing access to vital resources. Meaningful change starts with local ideas, and that’s where our commitment begins.

Through Lowe’s Community Bucket List, we invite customers and associates to share community improvement project ideas inspired by the needs and potential of their hometowns. The initiative is part of Lowe’s five-year, $100 million commitment to renovating and restoring spaces that serve as hubs and heartbeats of our communities.

From these project ideas, Lowe’s will award up to 100 Lowe’s Community Impact Grants to support large-scale renovation projects that make a lasting difference. In addition, Lowe’s associates will roll up their sleeves to tackle more than 2,000 community improvement projects across the country. Today, millions of Americans – many of whom are veterans, older adults on fixed incomes and low-income people with disabilities – live in deteriorating, physically inadequate homes that threaten their health and safety. Housing conditions are critical to the prosperity of the individuals who inhabit them and foundational to the ability of a community to thrive. This, combined with Lowe’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, drives our focus on improving communities through critical home repairs.

Each year Lowe’s partners with select nonprofits such as Rebuilding Together and Habitat for Humanity to identify and complete critical home repairs in the most vulnerable neighborhoods across America. As a home improvement retailer, we are uniquely suited to address this issue – not just through financial contributions but also by providing the products needed to get the job done. Every year, our red vest associates provide hearts in, hands-on expertise by teaming up with our nonprofit partners at many of the home repair projects, sharing in the opportunity to help their community thrive. 

Together with our partners, we are making a difference in communities across our nation. 

As a home improvement retailer, Lowe’s priority is to be there for our associates and communities before, during and after a natural disaster. Year-round, Lowe’s has a core team focused on disasters and how the company can better prepare and respond when needed.  

Our Mooresville-based Command Center is a rapid-response team that operates 7 days a week, 365 days a year to ensure our stores are stocked with the products our customers will need. Powered by the resiliency of Lowe’s supply chain network, the Command Center and strategically located distribution facilities allow us to expedite additional emergency supplies to our store communities. 

Following disasters, our recovery efforts include distributing critically needed cleanup supplies through our Bucket Brigades; partnering with local organizations to hand out free meals; and deploying our mobile Tool Rental Disaster Response Trailer to help people get both homes and businesses up and running. We also deploy our Emergency Response Team – a group of store associates who volunteer to travel to the impacted areas to provide customer support and give fellow associates who were impacted by the event time to focus on their families.  During times of need, Lowe’s deploys its fleet of laundry and shower trailers to provide essential services to our store associates.

Lowe's support for communities also includes financial support of numerous disaster relief nonprofits that respond to immediate needs and rebuilding efforts in the months and years following the event.

Lowe’s has a rich heritage of supporting and honoring military service members, veterans and their families. Through partnerships with organizations such as Building Homes for Heroes, Operation Finally Home and Purple Heart Homes, we work to address critical housing needs specific to the military community, renovating and repairing homes for servicemembers as they re-integrate into their communities. And through our annual Lowe’s Hometowns program, we provide transformative grants to select local nonprofit organizations to revitalize community spaces that specifically support the military.

With thousands of veteran and military spouse associates, Lowe’s also strives to be the employer of choice for the military community. By participating in the Department of Defense’s SkillBridge and Military Spouse Partnership, and other military assistance programs, we work to connect veterans, service members and military spouses to rewarding Lowe’s careers.

Lowe’s proudly offers a Lowe’s military discount for eligible purchases every day to military service members, veterans and their spouses.

In recognition of these efforts, Lowe’s has been named as a 2023 Military Friendly® Top 10 Company and Brand,  2022 Best Corporation for Veterans Business Enterprises and received the 2023 Military Friendly® Supplier Diversity award.

Every day, the shortage in the skilled trades workforce becomes more urgent. Studies show that 85% of contractors report trouble finding skilled workers, and an estimated 546,000 new skilled tradespeople will be needed to meet demand in 2023 alone.

To help address this critical issue nationwide, the Lowe's Foundation launched the Gable Grants program, a five-year, $50 million commitment to train 50,000 job-ready skilled tradespeople to support our communities for the long term. From 2023 to 2028, community and technical colleges and community-based nonprofit organizations across the country can apply for grants to recruit, train and employ the future skilled trades workforce.

Lowe's is also proud to offer associates tuition-free trades certifications through our Track to the Trades program. Track to the Trades offers associates the chance to grow their career at Lowe’s or to jump-start a career in the trades. Graduates leave the program better equipped to serve our customers or for a skilled trade apprenticeship.
