Tiny Home Village
A low-income housing organization – Sound Foundations NW – seeks to build another tiny home village that could temporarily house up to 50 residents at a time, helping get homeless people on the right path by providing them with a transitional space that is warm, safe, dry and healthy.
Why It Matters
Greater Seattle currently has over 11,000 homeless persons on the streets. The city has the third-highest homeless population in the United States. Last year, 52% of tiny home village residents who exited moved into long-term housing and 36% moved into permanent housing.
The Impact
“In 2000, due to unforeseen circumstances, I was days away from being homeless myself. Although that was over 20 years ago, I can still feel how utterly terrified I was,” wrote project nominator Barb Oliver, director of operations for Sound Foundations NW. “My friend Gloria picked me up by the scruff of my neck and plopped me down in her spare bedroom until I got on my feet. I will never forget her kindness. I vowed at that point that if I ever had a chance to pay it forward, I would.”
