Lowe’s is on a mission to be a leader in retail technology, and there’s never been a more exciting time to join our team. Changing the face of home improvement is no easy task, but Lowe’s is committed to our Tech Transformation, starting with a $550 million annual investment and the addition of 2,000 new Tech roles. As a member of Lowe’s Data Analytics and Computational Intelligence, you could play a key role in changing the way we shop, sell and support our associates — and we’re currently on the lookout for talented Senior Software and Data Engineers to join our Machine Learning & API Platform teams.
About DACI
With over 300,000 associates, 2,000 stores and millions of customers across the US and Canada, we rely on massive amounts of data to drive business decisions, increase efficiency and help us appropriately serve our communities. That’s where Data Analytics and Computational Intelligence comes in. Otherwise known as DACI, this team delivers solutions and invaluable data resources to business units across Lowe’s, and their work is integral to the Tech organization.
Within DACI, the Machine Learning & API Platform teams are the software and data engineers who build platforms to support DACI data scientists and business analysts. As Director Tom Anderson puts it, “How do we improve the productivity of our data scientists? And how do we democratize the ability to create machine learning solutions?”
Using machine learning to shorten the timeframe for delivering data solutions is a core driver of the team. Per Anderson, “If we had a business analyst who wanted to very quickly set up a process by which we could forecast something and set up anomaly detection, we can do that. That's our base-use case." API management is a key component of this team’s work, and the team is currently building a platform to help Lowe’s manage, secure and catalog current APIs, as well as put structure in place for future ones.
The work spans from deeply conceptual to more concrete cases. For instance, the team can build products to create financial forecasts for individual product lines. If a certain region or store is not meeting those forecasts, the team can share their findings with Lowe’s Marketing and develop granular, geotargeted campaigns to improve sales. As Anderson puts it, with the scale of a company like Lowe’s, there are “unlimited cases we can apply our work to… how we can use our technology is really based on your imagination.”
Team Culture
Lowe’s Tech has worked hard to cultivate a culture of strong collaboration, cutting-edge work and no limit on innovation. The Machine Learning and API Platforms teams are no different, and Director Tom Anderson has one standing rule — there’s no such thing as a bad question.
“The core of a healthy team is psychological safety. I want anyone on our team, regardless of level, to feel comfortable reaching out to me with any questions or ideas,” Anderson says. “If someone asks a question, two opportunities arise. The first is an opportunity to teach, and the second is an opportunity to learn. Learning and teaching are primary to how we succeed as a team.”
The Lowe’s ethos of community involvement resonates throughout the Tech organization, whether that means providing solutions for real-world issues or ensuring everyone has access to a great career in tech. Within Charlotte, the DACI team supports local organization Road to Hire, which provides paid technical training, access to scholarships and job placements within Tech to underserved high schoolers and young adults.
